TV series production jumps in wake of COVID-19 pandemic

Variety reports that while movies have taken a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, production for TV series is on the rise in Argentina. Two of the biggest Argentine movie directors have moved into making dramatic series, one with Netflix and another with El Estudio. The shift comes at a good time as the lockdown has hurt movie attendance and traditional TV outlets that depend on advertising. Details

Information security firm expands operations to Europe, Middle East 

Brazilian Kryptus, a cryptography and information security firm, is opening an operation in Switzerland, Business Wire reports. The new business unit will expand the company’s presence in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Kryptus serves financial institutions, private companies and governments.Details

Government weighing tax exemptions for companies

The productivity and competition secretary says the government is considering longer-term tax exemptions to support business, Reuters reports. Carlos da Costa says the government is trying to cut what he called “The Brazil Cost” of doing business by 20% to make the country more competitive. The government will announce other measures in the next few weeks in an attempt to prop up the economy. Details

Auto companies set dates to reopen their plants

Foreign-owned auto companies are getting dates to reopen their car-making plants, The Associated Press reports via the Daily Herald. Mexico lost about 500,000 jobs during the lockdown and pressure has grown to reopen the plants. The government says it wants to be careful but is willing to ease restrictions in areas that have not been hard hit by COVID-19. “There are whole regions where there are no cases ... so there, with a lot of care, with health checkpoints, we can start activities, depending on what happens in the coming days," President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says. Tequila exports to United States on rise during the lockdown

Tequila sales in the United States jumped 60% from the previous year, Mexico News Daily reports. Tequila can only be made in Mexico. Industry leaders managed to get the drink classified as an agricultural product. “Tequila is Mexico’s most important brand and one of the most emblematic industries in our country, supporting 70,000 jobs,” the president of the National Tequila Industry Chamber says. Stadium hallowed ground for futbol

Azteca Stadium in Mexico City is the only venue to hold two World Cup final matches and an Olympic final match. Built in 1961, the stadium currently seats about 87,000. It is the site of Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal in the final in 1986 as well as Pele’s goal in Brazil’s 4-1 win over Italy in 1970. The stadium offers guided 90-minute tours. Details
